Matala girls:
Horn here, just a quick note to say we have arrived and are settling in!
We had our first hatchlings today and theres plenty more little turtles where that one camp from!
It’s hot, exciting and challenging for all three of us! I’ll hit back when i next have a min to cool down and sign on. Ta Ta x
Jakki: and the sun sets on Day 1
Straight into it today with turtle training and nest shade making for me and first kiosk shifts for Rachel Jordan Michael and leila. Up at 5 in the morning for our first morning surveys out on the beaches. Camp already feels just like home. There are volunteers from America France Lithuania Spain Sweden Germany (and more we haven’t met yet). Some volunteers are leaving as they’ve...
Jakki: 4.25am Tuesday 26/7, ready for off!
Didn’t sleep a wink last night, way too excited and don’t want to miss the train on the first leg of our journey. Feeling the weight of responsibility being the holder of the entire teams boarding passes!
Abbey: Im sat having a pint in Newcastle… Roll on the next 5 weeks, I intend on making a few little turtles lives better, pushing myself, meeting some great new people, eating a life supply of fresh fish!

jakki: me, myself, I ..
the next 5 weeks will be entirely communal living - its quite a challenge to be sociable 24 hours a day for that length of time! Today is my packing day and I get to spend a little time with my own thoughts in my own space. I’m making an agreement with myself to do the same at some point during the trip, even if its just an hour somewhere :)
michael: Weighing in at 17 kilos...
… and 3 hours later, my big rucksack is ready to rock and roll! Complete with tent, matt, tripod, clothes etc. its a little under 17 kilos, so it isn’t too crippling to carry.
Dead excited now. Two more sleeps in a real bed, then its five glorious weeks of sun, turtles, good times and hard work for a good cause. Tuesday will be a long day of travelling but it will be well worth it;...
jakki: travel crisis averted, phew! Archelon...
Have spent the weekend being very busy (doing paperwork for the trip, ringing volunteers, taking my elderly mother shopping, doing the family shop, cooking the last sunday roast for a while .. haven’t packed yet though). Abbey’s dad discovered there is a national taxi strike on the day we land - very bad news as the 3 volunteers going to Matala would have to stay in Heraklion til the...
abbey: ruthless packing and still too much!
Abbey: Ruthless packing with my mum and I still have too much! The turtles don’t need all this stuff so why should I?! haha as long as I have me Piz Buin, a coupla euros and my sense of humour- I’ll be fine!
jakki: getting in the beach mood with a little bob... →
Everything gonna be alright ….
hayley: get set ..go
So I have never done a blog before , first time for everything I guess! I am currently doing some last minute packing and have to say packing is not one of my strong points. However were there’s a will there’s a way to get everything in one bag. I can’t wait to see everyone and be there now, not long :)

jakki: winding down ready for winding up ...
last day at work tomorrow, thank heavens! got plenty to do including final team Leader preparations for our trip. My ‘real work’ work is tidy and neatly handed over to capable hands and there’ll be nothing left unfinished. My weekend is going to be spent sorting out my motherly and daughterly duties making sure everyone i leave at home is organised and ok too (including the...
Weather
I keep looking at the weather forecast for crete and UK …. It’s almost incomprehensible that we’ll have sunshine warmth and blue skies for a whole consistent 5 weeks!
jakki: stressy
starting to feel a bit stressy now. Wondering how heavy my Team Leader pack, first aid kit, and other paperwork will be. Trying not to think about missing the train with everyones Boarding Passes in my possession …. On a positive note I’m doing really well on being minimal! And i’ve done really well not to stress til now! Jakki

Jakki - not long to go now!
In 2 weeks time we’ll be in one of the 3 archelon camps on Crete … Matala, Chania, or Rethymno. I’m very excited about returning to Rethymno! I think I’ll get even more from the experience this time as i don’t have the nervous apprehension of the unknown that i did back in 2009 :)
