On the turtle front everything’s going great everyone on camp has now whitnessed baby hatchlings .Me and Sara were lucky enough to see a nest hatch 7 baby hatchlings which we helped to sea. We have also mastered the art of excavations …the smell is pretty gross:\
Sara broke the kiosk record making a 121 Euro and received a bottle of Raki Aka Chunder dragon juice for her efforts:) All three of us have finally managed to do the cliff jump even though it did take me a good 45minutes to pluck up the courage to jump! We had a lovely BBQ the other night as a fair well to one of our long time volunteers (it was so nice to have meat) We are all off to Red Beach to get our tan on today. Cannot belive we have been here over three weeks now! Time flies when your having fun :)

hiya! currently in our local, loving life. i (frankie) got my nose pierced today and me and rach got jewellry with our names in greek letters.
Jakki: the last week has been incredibly busy here at the Rethymno camp and beaches. We’ve seen lots of volunteers reach the end of their stay and fewer new ones to replace them so we’ve had plenty of shifts and trained the new people. The hatchlings are becoming a regular morning delight when we patrol at sunrise! In the afternoons we are now excavating the nests that are over 62 days old to monitor the number of healthy eggs and record details of how many hatched successfully and how many didn’t. We’re doing public excavations in front of some of the popular hotels so tourists can see our work and maybe a rescued hatchling. I did my first one today with Rachel - sadly we had 91 eggs that were undeveloped as the nest had been washed over several times by the sea and there wasn’t enough warmth and dryness for the hatchlings to incubate.
Tonight i have yet another.hotel slideshow shift at El Greco - the hotel is ok but the entertainment drives me to despair! Definitely my least favourite shift as I’ve been up since 5 and won’t finish til 11ish.

- today i broke the 2pm-6pm kiosk takings record! (115.75 euro)
- i’ve said goodbye to loads of ace people
- i’ve gotten used to living in a tent
- i was robbed and am currently without a mobile (a rubbish handset though), ipod (120gb WAH)…

After a week off the beaches i am now back on morning surveys … I can’t wait to see my first hatchlings! So good to see the sunrise over the sea again. My work has been limited to camp duties and public awareness in hotels and.kiosk while I’ve been ill - very important work but going on stage to talk after the.kids mini discos is just a nightmare!
Jakki: day off, trip to the Arkadi monastery - beautiful drive through the lush olive groves that are the largest and most important in the Mediterranean. The monastery has an incredible history dating back to the 5th century and is in the foothills of mount Psiloritis (or mount idi ) the home of Zeus.

This evening we have the first excavation of a nest. We do this 10 days after the first hatchling appeared to check how many eggs were laid in total, recording how many hatched, how many were deformed or diseased and how many were unhatched. Often there will be healthy hatchlings at the bottom that can’t push their way up through the 100+ eggshells and we help them to the sea - we’ve invited tourists to watch so it would be lovely if there is a little one! I’ll be missing it as I’m still ill :( plenty more in the week though :)
